Police Officers Graduation Speech
Today is a day of congratulations for the individuals before us who have with great determination achieved their goal of graduating from the recruit academy.
Today, they have earned the right to serve their communities as police officers. This is a great privilege because there is no higher responsibility than that of service to society.
Not everyone can be a police officer. It takes someone special. To be a police officer you need the physical ability and the mental attitude to get the job done, but you need more.
It is a calling to serve as police officers. With that calling comes courage and integrity. There traits can’t be learned in the academy. They must come from within.
Your community demands not only for you to protect them in time of need, but they must trust your decisions whatever the situation. It is because everyone you deal with is an equal member of society.
As police officers we are bound by duty to protect the rights of all individuals, yet we have the authority to take away those rights in an instant.
We must be committed to protecting the people’s rights as we serve our communities.
We must be cautious in carrying out our powers to enforce the law.
Respecting our fellow citizens is foremost; ensuring dignity for everyone is our creed.
Our badge is our symbol of that obligation.
Our badge is a symbol of guardianship. We are guardians of the people. We are here to protect those in need. We are here to represent the good. We are here to stand up for truth and justice, and that means keeping ourselves to a higher set of standards at all times.
The badge is a heavy obligation, but an honorable one that only special men and women can carry.
There is a quote from American Entrepreneur, W. Clement Stone that reads, “Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity.”
Integrity is the main ingredient to having a successful career as a police officer. It is the delicate value that holds your faith, family and friends together. It is the one value that keeps you true to all that you believe and protect.
I say to the graduating class, carry the badge with pride and honor, never compromise your integrity as you serve as guardians of life and liberty. You are the good guys.
